Standing tasks

A home for work that never ends.

Support, project management, and client communications are real, often billable work with no finish line. Standing tasks hold their time under a client or project, and every start is a timebox.

Highlights

  • No finish line

Standing tasks have no lifecycle, Duration, priority, or due date. They never appear on the Tasks board, and the scheduler never plans them.

  • Every start is a timebox

Start adds a one-hour planner block and stops when it ends, or sooner when you press Stop. Log work adds minutes without a timer.

  • Billable like any work

Each standing task has a billable default, tags, and notes. Its time entries sit with the rest of your work in Time and Billing.

Tracking

Pick it wherever you record time.

Active standing tasks appear in the time-entry, timer, and meeting task pickers next to ordinary work, marked Standing, with the client and project they belong to.

  • Organization-level, or tied to one of its projects
  • Meeting time can be recorded against a standing task too
  • Each one keeps a billable default, tags, and Markdown notes

Lifecycle

Archive it when the work ends.

A standing task you never used can be deleted. Once it has time, its owner is fixed and it can only be archived, which keeps its history and stops new entries until you restore it.

  • Archiving waits until the task's timer stops
  • Archived tasks keep their place in past reports
  • Restore brings one back into the pickers

Good to know

  • A standing task belongs to an organization, or to one of that organization's projects.
  • Standing tasks never appear on the Tasks board or in Backlog, and Kernel never schedules them for you.
  • Starting one adds a one-hour planner block, and its timer stops when the block ends.
  • Once time or a meeting is recorded against one, its owner can no longer change.
  • An archived standing task keeps its time and can be restored later.
  • Ordinary tasks, habits, and standing tasks can't be converted into one another.
